A Guide to Chicago’s 5 Best Barbecue Restaurants

1. Porkchop

Known for it’s nostalgic, gourmet spin on BBQ, Porkchop creates an atmosphere and dining menu ideal for any whiskey and comfort food aficionado out there.  This West Loop restaurant opened just 2 years ago, and has made a name for itself in the Chicago restaurant scene serving everything from barbecue sides, fried chicken, ribs, and obviously, chops.

“PORKCHOP,” states the website, “creates a safe haven for chefs and diners alike to kick back; fill their bellies, their glasses and have a good time… every time.”

When a restaurant is named after a food item, you know it has to be excellent.  The almighty chop is a tender, 14 oz. Grilled Pork Chop with redskin potatoes and applesauce, you’ll be sure to clean the plate every time.

And what’s a good ‘cue without the taste of homemade side? To no surprise, the most ordered item in the menu is the Corn Bread with Honey Butter.

If you’re looking to end the meal with a sweet treat, Porkchop has the best Homemade Bacon Glazed Doughnuts with Vanilla Ice Cream you'll ever have.

2. Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar

Located in River North, this BBQ-meets-Asian concept uses Japanese colors and flavors meshed with good ol’ cue. 

Owners Mike Schatzman and Chef Chao have been able to keep up with city dining trends and bring the best of both worlds since their doors opened in May 2011.  You may even want to stop by the restaurant and check out the wide array of sake, liquors, Japanese beers, and craft cocktails.

As a start-off, many of our customers enjoy the Jumbo shrimp sprinkled with sweet black pepper, jalapeno, and sesame.  The Beef Filet Skewer with ginger soy sauce is also a must-try.

The Hokkaido Roll with Grilled scallops, avocado, masago-mayo, roasted peppers, jalapeño, cilantro, garlic, beautifully wrapped in soy paper.

Wait. There’s more.

If you ask anyone, they’ll tell you that Union hits it out of the park with the Black Rice Spicy Tuna Roll with spicy chili oil, masago, tempura flake, and mayo.

Chef Partner Lee Ann Whippen, a Kansas City Barbecue Society Certified Judge, has been competing competitively for over 14 years in the BBQ industry.

Taking a slightly modern approach at the world of America’s favorite cuisine, she beat Mr. Flay himself on Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay,” where she brough her A-game and Best BBQ pulled pork to the challenge.
