And the nominees for “Best Picture” are . . .
Aside from President Abraham Lincoln's commitment and love for the city itself, especially during his inagural trip, where he stopped to speak at Independence Hall in 1861, Philly is home to Snokey’s Oyster & Crab House.
Mrs. Snockey's Original Oyster Stew has remained the same since 101 years ago, and has always been made with eight medium-sized, steaming oysters.
Today, we'd like to commemorate Daniel Day Lewis' excellent portrayal of the 16th President of the US of A with his favorite course: Oyster stew. (Make your own with Bob Carter's recipe)
Ben Affleck's multi-nominated film Argo was based on the 1979 Iranian Hostage crisis. If you are somewhat familiar with the happenings that began with the militant occupation of the American Embassy in Tehran, you know that Canada's role was prominent.
In honor of the Canadian diplomats and ambassadors, be sure to enjoy the nation's most popular drink: the Bloody Caesar.
Cocktail Recipe (by IDNews.com)
6 oz. clamato juice
1.5 oz. vodka
2 dashes of hot sauce
1 dash of worcestshire sauce
stalk of celery
salt and pepper to taste
Garnish with lime slice.
After Tarantino's bold "Inglorious Basterds," the graphic story of two men hunting slave and plantation owners for money came to very little surprise. While making their way to Calvin Candie's (Leonardo DiCaprio) plantation in Mississipi, Django Freeman(Jamie Foxx) and Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz) live off of beans and biscuits.
Here are our suggestions for biscuits in your area:
- Boston: Post 390's Buttermilk Biscuits
- Chicago: Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen's homemade biscuits with honey
- Dallas: The Mecca's Three Homemade Biscuits & Gravy
- Philadelphia: Sabrina’s Café's No Pulp Fiction Brunch featuring Orange-cranberry-oat biscuit stuffed with scrambled egg whites and Cheddar

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Six-year-old Hushpuppy, her ill father, and their "Bathtub" community make the best of their poverty-striken home of southern Louisiana. Fleeing an oncoming storm and creating an emergency haven are only some of the ways the community stays alive as they fish for food and gather for crab-eating feasts.

"The world's longest running musical" is based in 19th-century France during a time of desperation and unstable economic conditions. Hugh Jackman, as Jean Valjean, and Anne Hathaway, as Fatine, achieve breakthrough performances during the anti-monarch June Rebellion, better known as the Parisian Uprising of 1832.
Eventually, the struggles of protagonist Jean Valjean turn into prosperity, success and health, which is what these French-inspired dishes represent:
- Boston: Filet au Poivre with cognac cream, grilled scallions, green peppercorns & pommes au gratin (Aquitaine)
- Dallas: Crispy Duck Legs Confit - Green lentils, frisee and lardon salad, armagnac poached prunes and petite carrots (Toulouse)
- Chicago: Tarte au Brie - Warm Brie cheese tart with red wine-honey vinaigrette, and candied walnuts (Bistro Margot)
- Philadelphia: House cured verbana Scottish salmon filet, French brioche toast, red oak salad with poached eggs and smoked bacon (Bistro St. Tropez)

This moving, powerful film captures the love story of a couple in their eighties. Although battling old age and uncontrollable helplessness, director Michael Haneke doesn't create an overwhelming feel like most mellowdramatic films today. We've chosen France's café au lait -- literally 'coffee with milk' -- to represent the normalities of everyday life reflected in "Amour."
4 1/2 cups whole milk
4 1/2 cups freshly brewed strong coffee or espresso
Makes 4 to 5 servings.
Optional condiments: ground cinnamon, vanilla beans, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, honey, strips of orange or lemon zest.
Zero Dark Thirty
Academy Award®-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker,2009) takes us through what is referred to as "the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man."
For this film, we came accross TheVine's recipe for Black Sesame Baked Falafel, including dried chickpeas and fresh mint, simply full of bold anticipation and mystery.
“It might be because of the way their pitch black sesame crust and lurid green interior perfectly echoes the sight of the film's extended night vision action sequence.”
Silver Linings Playbook
The comedy-drama centers around a man (Bradley Cooper) diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and his attempt to reconcile with his wife Nikki. Trying to live a normal lifestyle after being released from a mental health facility becomes a challenge, as his father's passion for the Philadelphia Eagles and superstitious ways create an emotional, yet entertaining plot.
What better way to celebrate than with Phillie's classic sandwiches and some bar favorites?
- Boston: Mile High Nachos layered with melted cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, and then we top them off with guacamole, jalapenos, sour cream, chili, and salsa (Coolidge Corner Clubhouse)
- Chicago: The Texican cheesesteak (Texadelphia)
- Dallas: Beef & Whiz sandwich (Which Wich) Cheez whiz & caramlized onions.
- Philadelphia: Cheesesteak (Steve’s Steaks)

Life of Pi
Viewers follow Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, from Pondicherry, located on the southeastern tip of India, and his Bengal tiger after a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean on the way to America.
We figured that recommending a pie would be too obvious, so we took a different route with Yann Martel's book-turned-film with a sweet, adventurous dessert called Kheer.
Kheer is a traditional Indian rice pudding dish made from milk, rice and dried fruits and a hint of cardamon, sometimes with almonds and nuts. It's typically found in most Indian or south Asian restaurants:
