Stephen Starr’s Alma de Cuba More Than Satisfies with Modern Latin Menu

 

Alma de Cuba, a Stephen Starr restaurant, is a perfect medley of sophisticated Caribbean dining and 1940s Old Havana, Cuba.  Its striking exterior and interior assimilate the Spanish, African, and indigenous Taino influences that can still be experienced in Alma’s revival of the Baroque architecture, lively music, and most importantly, the food.

Spanish for “Soul of Cuba", Alma de Cuba's modern Latin cuisine menu has been featured numerous times in Foodbooz, Examiner.com, CBS Philly, Center City Restaurant Week, and Zagat.

Zagat's Summary Review: You almost "expect Papa Hemingway" to appear at Stephen Starr and Douglas Rodriguez's "upscale", "special-occasion" Nuevo Latino, still "trendy" after a decade-plus in Rittenhouse; brace yourself for "invasive noise levels" generated by "high rollers" who "come for the mojitos" in the "dim" lounge but stay for the "bold flavors" "from land and sea" (e.g. "amazing" ceviche) and "world-class" desserts, all served by a "prompt, attentive" staff in the sleek, contemporary space.

A sexy red, black, and white interior with a tropical atmosphere attracts local regulars, tourist walk-ins taking a break from their shopping, as well as co-workers enjoying the lounge atmosphere with signature Mojito, and Caribbean rum flights with selected favorites from Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Dominican Republic.

“This is one of my favorite restaurants. And I'm not biased,” said Alma de Cuba Executive Chef Will Zuchman.

With over 15 years in the Starr Restaurant network, the Southwest Philly-native joined Alma de Cuba in 2012. 

As a classically French-trained chef has acquired much of his knowledge and experience from extensive travel to various regions of the world while taking in different flavors, techniques, and cooking styles.
